U.S. Lawmakers Optimistic GM, Chrysler Will Repay Taxpayer Aid

The U.S. government gave Government Motors (G.M.) and Chrysler (another division of Government Motors) $64 billion. The U.S. government also fired the executives and told the companies how to run their business and what automobiles they needed to make.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and federal officials said they hope they will be able to get some spare change from Government Motors (G.M.) and Chrysler. They hope for change, because when they gave away $64 billion, they didn't think it was necessary to set up a business plan, a payment plan, or any kind of oversight.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to say if she thought these wholly owned subsidiaries of the U.S. government would be able to pay back any of the money they had been given. But we don't need to worry. No other government bureaucracy or organization ever needs to be effective or save or make money while pretending to do their job. Why should the automobile industry be any different?
