Union squelches Tacoma school volunteers at weekend work party
Volunteers at a weekend work party at Fawcett Elementary School in East Tacoma came prepared to get their hands dirty.
But some say they felt like they were working with one grubby hand tied behind their backs last weekend due to school district and union rules.
The next time you want to volunteer to help make your child's school at better place for learning, don't. The schools don't want your help. Or maybe it is just the unions that don't want your help. In any case, as far as the unions are concerned, if they won't do the work, then nobody else should be able to either. If volunteer workers help out, it sends a bad message to the school board and the general public. The message the union doesn't want being sent, is that the union is not needed. That the union isn't getting the work done that they are being overpaid to do. So if the union can block volunteer helpers from doing the work, the union can then blame the system for not paying them enough to get the work done. Without volunteer help, the unions can then justify their enormous wages and pension benefits.
Now aren't you glad I explained why unions are a necessary part of preventing maintenance from being done at your child's school?
