Pope will 'not be intimidated by petty gossip' over sex abuse scandals
Pope Benedict XVI began Holy Week on Sunday by suggesting in his Palm Sunday address that the Catholic Church would "not be intimidated" by the sex abuse scandals sweeping it.

The church has the right to fight for what it believes in against secular authority.

The church has the authority of God behind it. So if the church believes in protecting priests who are predators and pedophiles, than that must be God's will as well. So the parishioners and the public have no right to question God's will (or the churches). Keep in mind that when the church is protecting priests from secular law, it is not doing anything different than any other organization that polices its own members.

After all, the church does a lot of good work. So the rest of the people shouldn't be bothered by priests taking advantage of troubled people they are supposed to be helping. Just think of it as a small price to pay for the comfort and presence of God's representatives on earth.

The church should not allow the complaints from thousands of victims sway the church from doing what it knows is right.

Actually, I'd agree with that. The church has the right to conduct itself as it sees fit, without government interference...

...so long as the church does not conduct itself like a totalitarian government, and church members are free to walk away.

Once you start letting the gov't order churches around, even when their internal affairs are a mess, you've given the gov't the right to order YOUR internal affairs around too -- your home, family, and business.

    Oh, wait....
